Last Relapse Revisits Its Roots with “Throw Away the Key”

Nearly 20 years after its beginnings, Atlanta-based indie rock band Last Relapse is revisiting its early sound with “Throw Away the Key.” Blending teenage angst with crisp sonic textures, the new single arrives after a 13-year hiatus and the release of a comeback EP in November 2025. Turn up the volume and let the song’s laid-back energy take over.

The track blends surf and indie rock, drawing on the strengths of both genres. Richly textured guitars create layers of sound alongside dynamic drumming. The song balances quieter passages with bursts of energy, while the raspy vocals leave a lasting impression. Toward the end, a guitar solo brings the piece to a powerful close. The production ties these elements together, giving the track a distinctive character.

“Throw Away the Key” holds a deeply personal place in the band's history. It was the first song its songwriter wrote entirely on his own, after teaching himself enough guitar to start composing independently. He began pursuing that path after being kicked out of a previous band whose members had decided to move toward a heavier sound, with screaming and no clean vocals. Written in 2006, when he was just 16, the song grew out of that setback and marked a new beginning.

The song preserves an authentic snapshot of its songwriter's youth. Its emotional intensity reflects the uncertainty and frustration he experienced in a relationship at the time.

“Throw Away the Key” brings a formative piece of Last Relapse’s history into the band’s new chapter, giving listeners a chance to hear where it all began.
