Maximalist, much like the Rococo art she recreates, filled with piercing sounds and intentionally exaggerated staging that serve as metaphors for life itself, “Panopticon” is the new single from singer, songwriter, visual artist, and free-spirited creative mind Savannah Pope.
The song is a carefully conceived production, not only in its theatrical sound, which moves elegantly through art rock, cinematic pop, and glam, but also in its lyrics, which leave room for interpretation.
Drawing from her own experience with constant pressure surrounding body image and sexual trauma, the artist captures in the track the kind of pressure that remains in our minds long after the people who imposed it have left our lives.
The title draws from the Panopticon, an architectural concept developed by philosopher Jeremy Bentham in the late 18th century. Designed around the possibility of being observed at any moment without knowing when surveillance is actually taking place, the structure was conceived to make people regulate their own behavior. In Pope’s hands, that idea becomes psychological, reflecting how external judgment can linger until the gaze we once feared becomes something we carry within ourselves.
The single is accompanied by a music video that stands as a work of art in its own right, inspired by Rococo aesthetics and the idea that more is more. In it, the singer appears in extravagant wigs, elaborately crafted costumes, and bold makeup, sharing the screen with characters as eccentric as the persona she embodies.
Pope offers a glimpse into her mind, presenting herself in two different settings. In one, she appears to be judged and singled out by those around her; in the other, she is seen dressed in measuring tapes, creating a striking image of society’s obsession with shaping people into prefabricated molds, elevating them into idealized models, and condemning anyone who does not fit them.
