The Bold Spirit of Self-Expression in OWO’s “Make Them Wonder”

Drawing inspiration from R&B, afropop, pop, and dance rhythms, Nigerian-American artist OWO arrives as a welcome spark in contemporary music. She has earned editorial playlist placements on Spotify and Apple Music, shared the stage with Burna Boy and Wizkid as an opening act, and received recognition from Harper’s Bazaar, adding to the growing momentum behind her music.

Her artistry effortlessly bridges sound, fashion, and performance, bringing a cultural perspective shaped by her upbringing across Nigeria and Prince George's County, Maryland. Following her 2021 debut EP, “SEEDs,” which she celebrated with a sold-out release show at Soho House, she continues to carve out her own distinctive lane.

Produced by Tobby Badass and mixed and mastered by Matt Cody, OWO’s new single “Make Them Wonder” blends Afrobeats textures with bright pop production, resulting in a lively, engaging rhythm that complements her smooth vocals and natural warmth. That warmth lends her confident delivery a playful quality, while the track’s energy reflects what she calls “gbas gbos,” a Nigerian expression she uses to describe different energies coming together with impact.

The songwriting balances attitude with deep introspection. The lyrics journey from the inner conviction of “the light dey inside of me” to a playful declaration that her essence cannot be replicated. “I no dey stress just run my race,” she sings, anchoring the song's confidence in a steady commitment to her own path. It is a track about moving forward, offering listeners a pure shot of brilliance.

As global pop continues to embrace African rhythms, artists like OWO are bringing their cultural backgrounds into an increasingly interconnected music scene. Her Nigerian-American background also informs the visual side of her work, connecting her music with her personal narrative. Onstage, the vibrant rhythms of “Make Them Wonder” would invite movement, while her flair for performance could bring the song’s playful confidence to life.
