Do you find yourself captivated by the ethereal, the surreal, and the darker edges of music? NJ native and New York–based artist Maxx Nies delivers exactly that. Just in time for Halloween Eve, she’s back with “Give Me A Reason,” a new single that deserves a spot on any Halloween playlist.
“Give Me A Reason” is a haunting ballad; desperate, emotional, and steeped in longing. Here, Maxx embraces the style that has become her signature: surreal and otherworldly, somewhere between The Cranberries and Poe with an esoteric touch, while channeling the raw intimacy of Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The music rises and falls in waves, her haunting vocals intertwine with an eerie rhythm that cradles listeners in a dark yet sweet lullaby. The mood is unmistakable; Maxx has created a distinctive atmosphere that feels dangerous but impossible to resist, like staring at something mysterious you can’t turn away from.
Maxx discovered early on that songwriting could be a way to process loss and find strength. At just seven years old, after the death of her great-grandmother, she began composing her own music. Seventeen years later, at 24, she continues turning life’s difficulties into songs that feel both personal and relatable. Inspired by the storytelling of artists like Taylor Swift, yet intent on carving out her own identity, she releases “Give Me A Reason,” capturing the emotional tensions driving her creative journey.
Written in a burst of inspiration, the song took shape in only ten minutes. Its urgency reflects the moment it was born, when Maxx was facing severe anxiety and panic attacks while moving on from a medication that had been part of her life since childhood. The song became a release, a way to let out emotions she had long kept inside. “This song came right from my heart onto paper,” Maxx shares. “It was like it was itching out of me, as if it needed to be released.”
