Diaspora and Dream Collide in The Realities We Dream at Mahara+Co
“The Realities We Dream” is a summer group exhibition at Mahara+Co that explores memory, identity, and myth through the lens of six contemporary artists from Brazil, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Chile, and Portugal. Co-curated by Heike Dempster and Ross Karlan, the exhibition draws inspiration from Fernando Pessoa’s idea that “the only reality is that which we dream,” inviting viewers into a dreamscape where personal history and cultural lineage are reshaped through material and form. Featuring works by Pedro Zhang, Jodi Minnis, Ernesto Gutiérrez Moya, Pedro Troncoso, Pedro Delgado, and Manuela Viera-Gallo, the exhibition presents a mix of painting, sculpture, and assemblage that reimagines gardens, domestic spaces, and political symbols. The Realities We Dream opened on August 2 and continues to attract attention for its compelling examination of how memory and myth are constructed, distorted, and passed on.
