Haunting melodies, eerie yet seductive vocals… SPELLES has truly created something special with “Diving Into the Arms of the Divine.”
SPELLES, the dream pop duo made up of Luc Laurent and Kathryn Baar are back, now releasing their long-anticipated debut album “Diving Into the Arms of the Divine.” Comprised of eleven songs each one is an exploration of our inner worlds and the private hells we have within. The duo is taking us on a journey through darkness and our most inner dreams. With strong inspiration from renowned musicians like Portishead, Radiohead, and Nina Simone, SPELLES masterfully crafts evocative lyrics, and by skillfully blending diverse musical elements, they create a body of work that is both compelling and moving.
As a result of placing their previously unreleased song "Bird in a Cage" on the TV series Pretty Little Liars in 2014, SPELLES broke through to the mainstream. Since then they’ve released two EPs: SPELLES and Skeleton Coast I, and multiple singles. With more than 5 million streams under their belts, their debut album, titled “Diving Into the Arms of the Divine,” will only add even more to their amazing repertoire.

The opening track titled "Intro (The Abyss)" serves as a good sample of what's to come. It reminds me of Nietzsche's renowned words - "If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you," - this quote feels right at home here, at the start of our mystical and cinematic venture. It is a perfect way to introduce us to the world of darkness that beckons us. As we delve deeper into the album, songs like “Night Terrors” will catch your attention with their haunting melodies. Kathryn's voice is both eerie and oddly enough very seductive, inviting us to join her in the void. "Beginnings and Endings" is the highlight of the album and it comes accompanied by an equally exquisite video. The enchanting rhythm perfectly suits the visuals where Kathryn is dancing in the eternal twilight. For good reason, this is the standout track and it has become my personal favorite.
"Flesh and Bone" is an exquisite explosion of sounds and emotions. The song is masterfully written and arranged in a way that captures the essence of the duo's unique style. We slow down a notch with "Double Life." This track is different from what we've heard so far, although it still has this eerie aura like the rest of the pack. With "Double Life," the duo showcases their unique take on a calming ballad, making it stand out from the rest of the songs in the pack. Kathryn's voice strongly reminds me of Christina Aguilera and Poe. Overall, this is a welcome change of pace. It's a powerful track that stays with you long after you've heard it. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good ballad. "Lift the Veil" is atmospheric to the core, a melodic cinematic experience like no other, and after it "Paradise" is here. The end of our long journey. They will make us transcend from this realm, and salvation will be given. A flawless end to an incredible experience.
The debut album "Diving Into the Arms of the Divine" by SPELLES is a true testament to their musical talent and artistry. As we delve deeper into the darkness with haunting melodies like "Night Terrors" and enchanting visuals in tracks like "Beginnings and Endings," it is clear that SPELLES has crafted something truly special. This album is not to be missed.
