Los Angeles-based Americana singer-songwriter Paula Fong stands out as one of the most compelling voices in today’s folk and roots scene. She draws listeners in with vocals that feel both soulful and soothing. Her delivery shifts naturally from intimate moments to quiet intensity within a single song, a balance few artists manage with such ease.
Fong often performs solo with her acoustic guitar, though she is sometimes joined by multi-instrumentalist Phil Glenn on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, or piano. Her live shows move fluidly between tender passages, driving country elements, and more exploratory sounds, leaving a lasting impression.
In 2024, Fong debuted with her EP “Chestnut Mare,” highlighting her versatility as an artist, while her single “Ophelia” earned a finalist spot in the International Acoustic Music Awards. Critics noted her strong connection to folk tradition and her ability to blend elements of country and bluegrass into something distinctive.
Her new single, “River Run,” opens a two-part, ten-song series produced by Justin Sinclair. The track leans into an all-acoustic arrangement, drawing inspiration from Punch Brothers. Its origin traces back to the banks of Oregon’s Mackenzie River, where Fong found herself with an unexpected day off while touring with Abby Posner. Sitting by the water with pen and paper, she let the river’s steady rhythm ease a weight she had been carrying. The song came together gently, echoing the pace of the current beside her.
She later revisited the unfinished verses, refining them with careful adjustments. The river gradually took on a deeper meaning within the song, reflecting how time continues to move even through difficult seasons. For Fong, it represents a space to pause, slow life’s pace, and quiet both external noise and inner thoughts.
The track unfolds with a steady, comforting feel, led by acoustic guitar and subtle banjo textures that move at an unhurried pace, evoking the stillness of the Pacific Northwest. Fong’s vocals remain warm and inviting, gently guiding the listener toward a sense of hope, even in uncertain moments.
“River Run” arrives at a moment when the world often feels overwhelming, offering a much-needed sense of release from daily tension. The song creates space to breathe, delivering a quiet calm at just the right time.
