Dan Saulpaugh Explores Faith and Distance in “I Waited For You”

Built around acoustic guitar and easygoing vocals, “I Waited For You,” Dan Saulpaugh’s latest folk release, creates a warm and unhurried atmosphere. Beneath its gentle melody lies a deeper reflection on faith and personal doubt, themes many listeners will recognize. Through the song, the songwriter reflects on these questions. Their ability to transform everyday moments into thoughtful and expansive narratives gives the track its quiet strength.

The piece was written shortly before the pandemic, during a period when Saulpaugh was regularly performing at open mics in New York’s Village. Immersed in the folk tradition surrounding those sessions, they were also searching for a clearer sense of their own voice within that lineage. The track also carries a small technical distinction in their catalog, as it remains the only song they’ve written using a capo.

At the time, Saulpaugh was contemplating a major transition, leaving their family and hometown in the North Country to build a life in New York City. That sense of uncertainty helped shape the song’s emotional core. Through the lyrics, the songwriter reflects on the idea that struggling with faith does not necessarily weaken belief and may instead become its own form of devotion.

The piece also reflects their belief that the past remains closely tied to the present. Personal history, including hardship, becomes part of the ongoing process of becoming whole. The real challenge lies in finding a way to transform those earlier struggles into something meaningful in the life that follows.

“I Waited For You” suggests that this kind of transformation rarely happens by accident. It often requires deliberate reflection, a willingness to forgive, and sometimes the perspective that only distance can provide. Through that process, the difficult parts of the past can gradually be reshaped into something that carries a quiet sense of grace.

The release also marks a new chapter for the artist, who first introduced listeners to their work on the 2018 EP “Before the Fire Is Gone” and is now preparing the rollout of their upcoming LP “Riverman” as a series of singles throughout 2026.

I Waited For You” invites comparisons to the style of Counting Crows, with songs like “Mr. Jones” and “Big Yellow Taxi” coming to mind. Drawing from both folk and alternative influences, Saulpaugh crafts a reflective track that stands among the more memorable releases of the year.
