Self-doubt takes center stage on Mai Mai’s “Why Me?”

Mai Mai (pronounced “my my”), a singer, rapper, and songwriter from Vallejo, California, enters a new chapter with Warner Records through her debut single for the label, “Why Me?” Built on warm basslines and a laid-back blend of melodic rap, R&B, and urban soul, the track traces the feeling of being chosen by someone and not quite believing you deserve it.

The singer unpacks the inner conflict of someone struggling to understand why they are being chosen, questioning their own worth in the process, while acknowledging the emotional complexity she brings into relationships and the fear of not being ready to fully receive love. At its heart, “Why Me?” is a meditation on self-doubt and emotional hesitation.

Lines like “I ain’t ready for nobody, I’m still growing” and “I can’t wait to say this is the old me, but I ain’t ready to be anybody’s trophy” capture that tension between growth and resistance to change.

Without a major label behind her, Mai Mai has built a social media following of more than half a million people through candid performances, unreleased song snippets, and the emotional honesty that runs through her music.

She was raised in a family of musicians and shaped by Bay Area culture. Among her early releases are "Over Critical," which has already surpassed 1.5 million plays, along with fan favorites "For What?" and "False Perception".

To mark the beginning of this new chapter, Mai Mai shared a message of gratitude with her community on social media, making it clear that more is on the way: “This is just the beginning of the journey, and I can’t wait to take you all with me. Thank you for being patient. Trust me when I say it’s all coming out. Let me know what you guys think about the song, love ya’ll!!!”
