Sevilla Merritt, known as Sevi, is a 14-year-old singer and songwriter from Los Angeles. She discovered her passion for music and performance at a young age, initially through acting in musical theater productions and later by learning to play the violin, piano, and guitar. Apart from music, Sevi enjoys journaling, fashion, attending theater and music shows, and spending time with friends. Currently a freshman at a performing arts high school, Sevi is poised to make a significant impact in the music industry.
During the Covid pandemic, she found her love for singing and joined a cover rock band as their vocalist. While still performing with the band, Sevi decided to pursue her musical path, resulting in the release of her debut single "Backup Friend", where she shines not just as a songwriter, but also through her airy and enigmatic vocals.
“The song is a reflection on the relationships with close friends that somehow go wrong. It shares the feeling of loss when you realize you are no longer the best friend in a relationship but have become someone who is deprioritized. A friend on standby.” – Sevi
The lyrics to Sevi's "Backup Friend" express feelings of betrayal and hurt caused by being relegated to the role of one such friend. Sevi reflects on how things went wrong and questions why she was treated this way. The lyrics convey a sense of insecurity and loneliness, highlighting the impact of being used and then discarded by someone they trusted. The chorus underscores the confusion and emotional turmoil experienced by Sevi, just as it captures the pain of feeling undervalued, serving as a powerful expression of the complexities of friendship and trust.
