“Fold” finds UNTER STRØM leaning into the darker side of their sound, trading explosive drops for a more immersive approach built on repetition, texture, and momentum. The track’s strength comes from the way its elements evolve over time, creating a hypnotic atmosphere designed for extended moments on the dancefloor.
That balance between intensity and restraint reflects the creative vision of the duo behind UNTER STRØM, Alex Gonzales of Matte Blvck and John Kunkel, known for his work with The New Division and his productions as John Grand. After years of crossing paths through bands and studio collaborations, the two artists developed this project as a space where techno, melodic house, and industrial influences could exist together. Emerging from the creative exchange between Los Angeles and San Diego, UNTER STRØM builds music made for late-night environments, clubs, and immersive audiovisual performances.
The foundation of “Fold” came together during a flight Gonzales took to Calgary, where he was scheduled to perform at a festival. The producer began experimenting with layered bass movement and minimal rhythmic elements, a combination that eventually became the core of the single. He later shared the session with Kunkel, who added further details and helped complete the structure.
Musically, “Fold” maintains a constant sense of tension and builds its intensity through subtle variations. This approach brings the track closer to minimal techno without losing the broad, cinematic atmosphere that defines UNTER STRØM’s work.
The track was mixed by Aaron Short, who has worked with Madison Beer, The Naked and Famous, and So Below, while mastering was handled by Mike Marsh, an engineer recently associated with Nine Inch Nails’ “Nine Inch Noize.” It is a fitting credit for a production shaped by industrial influences.
As the project’s second single, “Fold” reveals a more restrained side of UNTER STRØM than their previous material. It also confirms that Gonzales and Kunkel aim to create tracks in which repetition, atmosphere, and emotional tension carry as much weight as rhythm.
