CAN’T PRETEND, the new single from the all-female rap collective CUZZOS, takes a firm and confrontational stance despite its soft, even sensual melody. The lyrics hold nothing back, spitting everything out without sacrificing the aesthetic of their music, while an unmistakable edge sits beneath the fluid, at times introspective synths.
Like a letter addressed to those who pretend to have what they don’t, in which euphemisms were never invited, the song puts CUZZOS’ hard-earned success front and center, making it clear that everything they celebrate is something they’ve actually built.
“‘CAN’T PRETEND’ is a statement on authenticity,” say CUZZOS. “In a culture where people often feel the need to fake success, this record stands on the opposite. We don’t pretend to have what we don’t. If you see us celebrating or flossing, it’s because it’s real. What others may do for appearances is simply our reality. This is about actually living what you represent.”
The track also makes the most of the vocal abilities of each member of the collective, Big I-N-D-O, JassCole, Milly Mo, TeaaWhy, and BB, distributing verses, the chorus, and backing vocals like small solo moments that, at times, shine together within a remarkably cohesive fusion. The bassline adds weight to the production and reinforces their roots in the West Coast sound, while each contribution brings a distinct personality.
With this new single, CUZZOS emphasizes that their achievements came from the ground up while drawing a clear line between themselves and those now trying to get closer as the collective gains greater visibility. Celebration, money, and clothes emerge as symbols of a status that is impossible to hide, as they themselves point out.
References to Kill Bill, the Pussy Wagon, David Ruffin, John Cena, Spike Lee, and the Blue Note run throughout the lyrics without disrupting their flow, functioning as extensions of the personalities of its members, women fully aware of their appeal, influence, and the space they occupy within a scene where they are no longer waiting for anyone’s approval.
CUZZOS first began attracting attention with the 2023 mixtape TAKE 25 and continued expanding their artistic vision with 2024’s SAFE and 2025’s FAMILY REUNION. Along the way, they have also collaborated with names from the Los Angeles scene, including AZ Chike, Buddy, Kalan.FrFr, and Mark Lux.
GOOCHIE MAYNE, one of their best-known releases, has surpassed four million streams, while its video has accumulated 3.5 million views. The collective also performed at The Pop Out: Ken & Friends, Kendrick Lamar’s Juneteenth concert at the Kia Forum, and appeared in the video for Squabble Up.
Now backed by the voice of experience, CUZZOS celebrates their reality with humor, sensuality, and a confidence shared across five distinct voices through CAN’T PRETEND, a straightforward single packed with references to local pop culture and carrying the unmistakable signature of a complex, maximalist collective in which no word is ever wasted.
