Nulbarich, a Neo City Pop band, derives its name from the combination of "Nul" meaning nothing, and "Rich" meaning filled, representing their founder JQ’s ambivalent style. This Japanese group stands out as one of the most intriguing musical acts emerging from their country. Currently residing in LA they are now seeking to extend their presence beyond their Japanese audience and establish a global presence. They're collaborating alongside Dutch musician, producer, and songwriter Benny Sings to deliver an impressive new single "Just a Game." Using their fashion they created a sublime and emotional pop sound, they blended two different languages without much effort.
If you're a fan of Maroon 5, Coldplay and The 1975 “Just a Game” is going to be right down your alley. The tune is easy to listen to and it perfectly represents Nulbarich's signature style. The lyrics are thoughtful and meaningful, and the song has a catchy hook that will stay with you long after your first listen. Benny Sings gives a nice Western touch to the song, complimenting Nulbarich's sound. One thing that stands out is the short guitar solo right in the middle, taken straight out of 60's psychedelic. Great stuff. All in all, this song is a great way to explore a unique genre of Japanese music. Most people are likely more familiar with traditional Jpop/Jrock stuff that you hear in anime openings, but Nulbarich music is a good place to start if you want to try something different.
Being one of the most prominent Neo City Pop bands in Japan, they have a spectacular track record under their belt. In 2017 they had the opportunity to be the opening act for Jamiroquai. This was followed by a successful tour in 2018 and 2019 where they sold out two of Japan's most prestigious venues: the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo and Saitama Super Arena in Saitama. These iconic venues have a combined capacity exceeding 25,000, which is a remarkable achievement that should not be underestimated. In addition to their impressive live performances, their music has also gained recognition through being featured in various TV commercials for influential companies such as Nintendo, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, and Beats by Dr. Dre plus a collaboration in the anime series "CAROLE & TUESDAY" directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and produced by studio Bones. On their previous album "New Gravity" they collaborated with a plethora of artists from both Japan and around the world, including Thai artist Phum Viphurit. One of the first steps that enabled them to break through to the international public was their highly successful cover of Tatsuro Yamashita's “MAGIC,” their first song fully in English.
Nulbarich is a great display of what Japan can produce. Their artistic vision is uniquely refreshing. It's a style that's hard to find elsewhere and is sure to captivate listeners. They're a great example of the power of Neo City Pop and its ability to encapsulate catchy beats and melodies. You won't be disappointed.
