Sam Marke has no reason to miss an ex in “Hypothetically”

Breakup songs often revolve around pain, nostalgia, regret, and the desire to win back the person who left. However, Sam Marke turns that narrative into a bitter composition about realizing that a relationship was so negative that it left no room to miss the person who was once part of it.

Titled “Hypothetically,” The protagonist wishes he could relate to all those songs about missing an ex, but his own experience prevents him from doing so. There are no idealized memories or hopes of reconciliation. What remains instead is the certainty that the absence is far easier to endure than the relationship itself, and as a result, the breakup becomes more about disillusionment than pain.

Musically, “Hypothetically” draws inspiration from Haley Joelle’s “LA,” a song Sam admires for both its writing and its sound. In particular, he wanted to capture the sensitivity of the piano used by Michael Blum in that production.

The song marks his first collaboration with Syd Franklin, an artist who entered his circle through Clifton Jennings, his main songwriting partner. These creative connections became an important part of a track developed during a period marked by personal loss and external difficulties.

As an autistic songwriter, Sam Marke speaks openly through his music, crafting songs rooted in brutally honest storytelling. His work is built on honest writing focused on personal experiences and emotions that are difficult to soften, and this song is a clear example of that approach.
