Kabuki love was born as a duo during the pandemic lockdown, in part no doubt as an answer to boredom and the creative urges that overtook them in a time so rife with despair. This last bit manifested a lot in their goth and post-punk-infused sounds.
Describing themselves as “Sometimes dark, sometimes light,” Kabuki Love’s sound is complex and flavorful, like the kind of strong cocktails that cause you trouble when out on the town. They’re raw in all the right places and just as melodic and catchy as their borderline psychedelic edge will allow, and their newest single, “Silver Eyes,” pushes that balance further.
"Silver Eyes" was written by Rima, the band’s founder, singer, and guitarist. The track was born from a spontaneous and instinctual process, taking shape during relaxed guitar sessions where overthinking was cast aside. This straightforward approach allowed Rima to focus on emotional depth, resulting in a song that captures themes of life, death, youthful aspirations, and the disillusionment that often accompanies them, with the music carrying these themes almost inexplicably through its unique vernacular.
"Silver Eyes" marks a significant transition from keyboard to guitar, leading to a more authentic and fulfilling creative process, she reveals. The song has been performed live multiple times with her band, each rendition exuding a catchy, vibrant energy that resonates with the audience. It carries a deep emotional significance, reflecting the joy of creation and connection.
Gloomy, catchy, grungy, and slightly psychedelic… It’s easy to hear why the song is a key part of Kabuki Love’s growing live repertoire, and it comes as a blessing for fans of the band, who have been eagerly waiting for new music since their last single release in 2023. With “Silver Eyes,” Kabuki Love continues to cement themselves on the NYC scene and beyond as a broad-spectrum rock band that can draw in from many corners of the genre, kind of like how Motörhead were so broadly rock that no subgenre or tag could claim them exclusively; this, I think, is the band’s greatest strength and the absolute best compliment I can give them. Rock on!
